U.A.E. consists of diverse population mix of over 100 different nationalities that made up more than a million people. Out of this number, around 82 percent are expatriates from around the world.

From the figure, Asians comprise approximately 65 percent with majority of that are Indians. UAE Nationals accounts only around 18 percent, Arab Expatriates (from neighboring Arab Country) at 13 percent, and numerous other peoples comprise the remaining 2.5 percent.

U.A.E. Nationals wear the typical Arab dress or "dishdasha" and a headdress called a "ghuttra".

On the otherhand, Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and most types of casual dresses can be worn. However, in deference to local customs and norms it is a good idea not to wear very short or tight clothing.

Sharjah has the strictest mode of casual dressing. Wearing short "shorts" on public places even for men are strictly prohibited.

Normal tourist photography is acceptable but it is considered offensive to photograph Muslim women. Like anywhere, before photographing men it is a good idea to ask permission.

Language

While Arabic is the official language, English is very widely spoken, especially in business. Given the large size of the expatriate population, several other languages are also used in everyday life, headed by Hindi, Urdu and Farsi
